Significant Drug Seizure and Militant Arrests in Manipur
In a significant development, the Assam Rifles, in collaboration with Manipur Police, have busted a major drug racket and arrested several individuals involved in drug trafficking and militant activities in Manipur. The operations, which took place on December 25, 2025, have led to the recovery of large quantities of illicit substances and the arrest of several drug peddlers and militants.
Drug Seizures and Arrests
During a joint anti-narcotics operation in Jiribam district, Assam Rifles personnel recovered 1.60 lakh methamphetamine tablets, also known as Yaba tablets, from a truck. The seized contraband, along with the apprehended person and the truck, were handed over to Jiribam Police for further investigation.
In another operation, Manipur Police arrested Mohammad Mustakim, a drug peddler from Mantripukhri in Imphal East district, and recovered heroin weighing approximately 310 grams from his possession.
Militant Arrests and Recoveries
In a third operation, security forces arrested Salam Shyam Singh, an active cadre belonging to the proscribed Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) militant outfit, from a rented house in Imphal West district. From their possession, security forces recovered 111 rounds of ammunition of different calibres, one 36 HE grenade without a detonator, two detonators, two mobile phones, and two Aadhaar cards.
Another associate of the KYKL cadre, Salam Naobi Singh, was also arrested from his residence. From their possession, security forces recovered additional ammunition and explosives.
Implications for North East Region and India
The seized methamphetamine tablets are banned in India and are suspected to have been smuggled from Myanmar. Myanmar's Chin state has emerged as a major hub for the smuggling of drugs, exotic wildlife, and other contraband through several districts of Mizoram, which shares a porous 510-km border with the neighboring country.
Manipur, too, shares an unfenced international border with Myanmar, with five districts Churachandpur, Tengnoupal, Chandel, Kamjong, and Ukhrul sharing a 398-km border. The border's porosity and the growing drug menace pose significant challenges to the law enforcement agencies in the region.
Looking Ahead
The successful operations by the Assam Rifles and Manipur Police underscore the commitment to curb drug trafficking and protect society. However, the ongoing fight against drug trafficking and militancy requires continuous efforts and cooperation between various security agencies and the public. As the region grapples with these challenges, it is crucial to strengthen border security, enhance intelligence-sharing mechanisms, and adopt a holistic approach to address the root causes of these issues.
