Protests in Guwahati: A Call for Peace and Justice in Karbi Anglong
On a chilly December day in Guwahati, the capital city of Assam, three prominent student and women's organizations took to the streets to demand peace, justice, and protection of the rights of the people of Karbi Anglong. The joint protest, organized by the Students Federation of India (SFI), Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), and the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA), drew attention to the ongoing unrest in Karbi Anglong and the government's alleged failure to address the region's long-standing issues.
Government's Role in the Karbi Anglong Unrest
The protesters accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Assam government, specifically Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, of adopting an authoritarian and undemocratic approach that aggravated the situation in Karbi Anglong instead of resolving it through dialogue. They argued that the government's alleged obstruction of a prolonged democratic movement with legitimate demands had contributed to the prevailing unrest.
Demands for Land, Political Rights, and Identity Protection
The protesting organizations called for the effective protection of land, political rights, and the distinct identity of the Karbi Anglong region in accordance with the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. They demanded the restoration of peace and the assurance of safety for ordinary citizens.
Corruption Allegations and Economic Concerns
DYFI state secretary Nirankush Nath accused the state government of presiding over a corrupt nexus across Assam, including Karbi Anglong. He claimed that despite serious corruption allegations, no action had been taken against Tuliram Ronghang, alleging political protection. Nath also claimed that more than 1.5 lakh bighas of land in Karbi Anglong had been transferred to major corporate groups, arguing that land rights under the Sixth Schedule were being undermined.
Stressing the economic concerns of the Karbi people, Nath said land protection, addressing the agrarian crisis, and securing markets were essential to strengthening the community economically.
Communal Polarization and Allegations of Anti-Tribal Bias
SFI state joint secretary Utpal Das questioned the circumstances under which slogans such as Jai Shri Ram and Chinese Karbi Go Back were allegedly raised simultaneously during recent incidents. He accused the BJP, guided by RSS ideology, of being anti-tribal and alleged that communal polarization was being used to divert attention from core issues of land and rights.
Relevance to North East India and Broader Indian Context
The ongoing unrest in Karbi Anglong is not an isolated incident but a reflection of the complex and deeply rooted issues faced by many regions in the North East, where the balance between preserving cultural identities and promoting development remains a delicate and contentious issue. The protests in Guwahati serve as a reminder of the need for genuine dialogue, democratic governance, and respect for the rights and identities of the diverse communities in the region.
Looking Forward: A Path Towards Resolution
The protests in Guwahati highlight the urgency for the Assam government to address the concerns raised by the protesting organizations and work towards resolving the ongoing unrest in Karbi Anglong. It is crucial for the government to engage in meaningful dialogue, uphold the principles of democracy, and prioritize the protection of land, political rights, and the distinct identity of the Karbi Anglong region. Only then can the people of Karbi Anglong and the North East as a whole move towards a more peaceful, just, and prosperous future.
