Tragedy on Goechala Trek: A Call for Improved Safety Measures
A recent incident on the Goechala trekking trail in West Sikkim has raised concerns about the safety of trekkers and the need for enhanced medical facilities and emergency response mechanisms in the region.
Fatal Accident and Rescue Efforts
On Thursday night, a 45-year-old trekker named Suraj Kumar Tiwari from Uttar Pradesh passed away while descending the Goechala trekking route. The incident occurred near the Phedang campsite, around 22 kilometers from Yuksam. Tiwari had been part of an eight-day trekking expedition through the Khangchendzonga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
According to fellow trekkers, Tiwari had reportedly fallen ill during the return journey on Thursday morning and developed paralysis-like symptoms around 9 am near the Kokchurong campsite. Despite immediate first aid and rescue efforts, Tiwari succumbed to his condition around 8 pm near the Phedang campsite.
Health Concerns and Previous Incidents
The cause of Tiwari's death is suspected to be low blood pressure, although he had no known prior health-related issues. This tragedy marks the third fatality reported on the Goechala trekking trail in recent times. Earlier, a trekker from Kolkata had died due to Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) along the same route, while another local resident from Geyzing also succumbed to AMS-related complications during a separate trekking expedition.
Call for Enhanced Safety Measures
In light of these repeated fatalities, local tourism stakeholders in Yuksam have urged the concerned authorities and the State government to strengthen and upgrade medical facilities, emergency response mechanisms, and rescue infrastructure along the Dzongri Goechala trekking corridor to prevent further loss of life.
