The Arunachal Frontier Tribal Forum (AFTF), a regional political party in Arunachal Pradesh, has called for the abolishment of the 80:20 ratio in state civil service examinations and the compulsory presentation of ST and PR certificates for recruitments conducted by the Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) and the Arunachal Pradesh Staff Selection Board (APSSB).
The Outdated 80:20 Ratio
AFTF Chairman Tadak Nalo stated that the current 80:20 ratio, which was implemented after 1991, is no longer relevant. Nalo pointed out that before 1991, the ratio was 50:50, and during that time, the state's literacy rate was less than 30%, and numerous government jobs were available. Today, with high unemployment rates and a significant number of educated youths, the current ratio seems to disadvantage the local population.

Nalo compared the eligibility criteria in states like Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Assam, which require domicile certificates of the particular state. He argued that Arunachal Pradesh should adopt a similar approach to ensure that local candidates have a fair chance at government jobs.

The AFTF will organize a signature campaign-cum-awareness program on Wednesday to gather support for scrapping the 80:20 ratio. The campaign will begin in Itanagar and move to other districts, with the goal of creating a more equitable recruitment process.
