Addressing Racism: MSF Calls for Action for Northeast Students

In the wake of a tragic incident involving the death of a student from Tripura in Uttarakhand, the Manipuri Students Federation (MSF) has demanded immediate action from the central and state governments to combat racism and ensure the safety of students from Northeast India.

The Tragic Incident and its Aftermath

On 09 December 2025, Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, was allegedly assaulted in Dehradun. He succumbed to his injuries on 26 December 2025. The MSF claims that the attack involved racial slurs and multiple stab wounds, with the assailants targeting the victim due to his physical appearance.

Persistent Racism and Discrimination

The MSF views this incident as a stark reminder of the persistent problem of racism, discrimination, and hatred faced by people from Northeast India in other parts of the country. Such acts, according to the federation, are unacceptable in a democratic society and require firm intervention by the authorities.

North East Region Context

The Northeast region, with its diverse ethnic groups, has long grappled with issues of discrimination and stereotyping. People from the region often face racial abuse and social exclusion due to their physical features, creating an environment that often leads to hate crimes and physical violence.

Call for Action

The MSF has urged the Prime Minister, the Union Home Minister, and the Uttarakhand Chief Minister to ensure the immediate arrest of all those involved and the initiation of strict legal action. It further calls upon the central government to implement special protective measures for students and residents from the Northeast who live or pursue education outside the region.

Broader Indian Context

The call for action by the MSF is not isolated to the Northeast region but resonates with the larger Indian context. Addressing racism and discrimination is crucial for maintaining social harmony and fostering a unified nation.

Looking Forward

As students are the future of the nation, safeguarding their safety, dignity, and well-being is a fundamental responsibility of the government. The MSF expressed hope that concrete steps would be taken to prevent similar incidents and to ensure a safe and secure environment for students from Northeast India across the country.
