Analysis: Catholic Forum seeks PM Modis intervention over surge in attacks on Christians

Rising Attacks on Christians: A Concern for Northeast India and Beyond

Rising Attacks on Christians: A Concern for Northeast India and Beyond

The North East Catholic Research Forum (NECRF) has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for urgent intervention against escalating targeted attacks, intimidation, and restrictions faced by the Christian community across India, particularly during the Christmas season.

Modi's Outreach vs. Persisting Violence

The NECRF acknowledged Modi's recent outreach to the Christian community, including his participation in Easter and Christmas programs, as positively received by Christians nationwide. However, the NECRF expressed concern over a pattern of systematic violence and harassment against Christians despite constitutional safeguards.

Incidents of Violence

In its representation to the Prime Minister, the NECRF highlighted numerous incidents of violence and harassment, including physical assaults, sexual offences, murders, threats, intimidation, destruction of churches, disruption of prayer services, and desecration of religious symbols.

Misuse of Anti-Conversion Laws

The NECRF accused certain organizations, such as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal, and affiliates of the Sangh Parivar, of carrying out these incidents. The forum also alleged that anti-conversion laws in certain states were being misused to harass poor and marginalized Christians and to obstruct religious and humanitarian activities.

Implications for Northeast India and India at Large

The rising attacks on Christians are not confined to a specific region and pose a threat to religious harmony and peace throughout India. In Northeast India, the region's Christian population may feel increasingly vulnerable and fearful, potentially leading to increased tensions and unrest.

Call for Action

The NECRF appealed directly to Prime Minister Modi for a clear word of disapproval, which could help curb such incidents and restore confidence among minorities. The forum also urged the Centre to direct states to prevent the misuse of anti-conversion laws and ensure the protection of religious freedom and public order.

Looking Ahead

As India continues to grapple with these issues, it is crucial for all communities to work towards promoting mutual respect, understanding, and peace. The Prime Minister's response to the NECRF's appeal will serve as a testament to his commitment to Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayaas.
