Dr Sadagar Deuri, known for his selfless service to underprivileged patients, lost approximately Rs 49 lakh to cybercriminals.

The scammers, impersonating law enforcement officials, duped Dr Deuri through a series of deceptive transfers. The scam, termed a "digital arrest scam," is a new twist in cybercrime, where fraudsters claim to be law enforcement officers and demand money transfers, allegedly for verification or clearance purposes.
Assam Police on High Alert: A Fight Against the Evolving Digital Threat
In response to the FIR filed by Dr Deuri, the Cyber Police Station of the Crime Investigation Department (CID), Assam, has initiated action. The investigating team has managed to place a hold on more than Rs 8 lakh of the defrauded amount. Collaborative efforts with banks and financial institutions are underway to freeze additional accounts and facilitate the reversal of funds to Dr Deuri's account.
The CID is leaving no stone unturned in their investigation, employing technical analysis and inter-agency coordination to trace the money trail, identify the perpetrators, and bring them to justice.
A Call to Vigilance: Protecting the Northeast from Cyber Frauds
The Cyber Cell of CID Assam has urged citizens to remain vigilant against such cyber frauds. They emphasized that no legitimate law enforcement agency conducts arrests through phone or video calls or demands money transfers for verification or clearance.
In case of any suspicious call or message claiming involvement in a case, citizens have been advised to immediately contact the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 or report the matter online at cybercrime.gov.in.
