Analysis: YFPHR condemns killing of northeast student in Dehradun

Justice Denied: The Killing of Northeast Students in India

A Tragic Reminder: The Killing of Angel Chakma in Dehradun

The tragic death of Angel Chakma, a young student from Tripura pursuing management studies in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, has once again highlighted the ongoing racial violence and systemic discrimination against people from Northeast India. The Youth's Forum for Protection of Human Rights (YFPHR) has strongly condemned this inhumane act, terming it a part of a continuing pattern of violence against Northeast citizens.

A Pattern of Impunity and Injustice

The YFPHR's statement highlighted the continued delay and denial of justice in such cases, citing the unresolved case of Pravish Chanam, who was found cremated as an unclaimed body despite a missing complaint having been officially lodged with the police. The forum noted that family members and civil society organizations had raised allegations of organ trade in the case, but justice has yet to be delivered.

North East India and Beyond

These incidents are not just isolated incidents but reflect a broader issue of racial violence and systemic discrimination against people from Northeast India. This issue is not limited to Uttarakhand but is prevalent across India, affecting the safety, dignity, and equal protection under the law of Northeast citizens.

Demand for Action and Legislation

The YFPHR has called upon the Government of India and the Government of Uttarakhand to take immediate and decisive action to arrest all those involved in the crime, conduct a fair, transparent, and time-bound investigation, and award stringent punishment without delay. The forum has also urged the Union government to enact and strictly enforce comprehensive legislation to prevent racial violence, hate crimes, and discrimination.

Moving Forward: Restoring Faith in the Rule of Law

Justice for Angel Chakma, Pravish Chanam, and all victims of racial violence against people from Northeast India is essential to restore faith in the rule of law and to ensure that no citizen is targeted, attacked, or killed because of their identity or place of origin. It is crucial that the government takes immediate action to prevent the recurrence of such acts and to ensure justice for the victims and their families.
