The 79th National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy, a prestigious tournament in Indian football, has taken a significant step forward with the draw for the Final Round. The event, scheduled for January 21 to February 8, will be hosted in Dhakuakhana and Silapathar, Assam.

The Competitive Landscape

Twelve teams have been divided into two groups of six each, providing a competitive landscape for the tournament. Group A consists of the hosts Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Nagaland, and Rajasthan. Meanwhile, Group B includes Kerala, Services, Punjab, Odisha, Railways, and Meghalaya.

Qualification Process

Assam, West Bengal, and Kerala secured their spots through direct qualification. Assam, as the hosts, and West Bengal and Kerala as the winners and runners-up of the 2024-25 edition, respectively.

The other nine teams qualified by finishing as the top teams in their respective groups during the Group Stage held earlier this month.

The Knockout Stages

The top four teams from each group will progress to the knockout stages. The quarter-finals will be played on February 2 and 3, the semi-finals on February 5, and the final on February 8.

Regional Significance

For the North East region, hosting the Final Round of the Santosh Trophy presents an excellent opportunity to showcase its football talent on a national stage. Assam, Nagaland, and Meghalaya are all part of the tournament, which will not only boost their morale but also inspire the next generation of footballers.

Moreover, the tournament's presence in the region will foster a sense of unity among the North Eastern states, encouraging inter-state cooperation and friendly competition.

Looking Ahead

The 2025-26 Santosh Trophy Final Round promises to be an exciting event, with each team vying for the coveted trophy. As the tournament progresses, we can expect to witness thrilling matches, emerging talent, and a renewed spirit of camaraderie among Indian football enthusiasts.
