Indian Super League: A New Dawn for Football in India
After months of uncertainty, the Indian Super League (ISL) is set to kick off on February 14, bringing much-needed clarity to the footballing community in India and across the Northeast region.
The Road to Consensus
Following a series of high-level meetings, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, ISL club representatives, the All India Football Federation (AIFF), and officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports reached a consensus to proceed with the league. This decision signals a significant step forward after prolonged deliberations over the league's future.
The Format and Participants
AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey announced that the upcoming season will feature 14 teams participating in a single-leg home and away format with a Swiss model. A total of 91 matches will be played, with the venue to be decided by the clubs. The league will also have a governing council board with the autonomy to make commercial rights decisions and determine tournament fixtures.
Simultaneously, the I-League will also run, featuring 11 teams and 55 matches. Meanwhile, I-League 2 and I-League 3 will be pushed to March, with 7 additional teams, bringing the total to 40 teams distributed across five different zones based on Indian demographics.

The Indian Super League is not just a national event; it has a significant impact on the Northeast region, which is home to several football clubs participating in the league.
