Analysis: Bite allegation, ring chaos rock National Boxing Championships; Nikhat& Minakshi win

National Boxing Championships: Chaos and Controversy

National Boxing Championships: A Battle Inside and Outside the Ring

The National Boxing Championships, held in Greater Noida, have once again found themselves in the headlines, not for the performances of their top-tier boxers, but for controversies that overshadowed the event. Despite the victories of Nikhat Zareen and Minakshi Hooda, the championships were marred by questionable refereeing, disrupted bouts, and biting incidents, casting a shadow over the competition.

Biting Incidents and Disrupted Bouts

The men's competition saw two significant incidents. Railways Sports Control Board boxer Ishmeet accused All India Police's Mohit of biting him during their middleweight (75kg) bout. Despite visible bite marks and a standing count in the opening round, the referee allowed the bout to continue, leading to protests from the Railways camp. Biting in boxing is a severe foul that can result in immediate disqualification.

The Bantamweight (55kg) contest between Service's Pawan Bartwal and Lalit was ruled in favor of the former after a mid-bout protest by the AIP contingent. The AIP claimed that Pawan was not ready to box in the third round, leading to the bout being declared abandoned. However, the Services camp countered these claims, stating that Lalit was tired and that the Police coaches staying inside the ring even after the time warning was a strategy to buy extra time for recovery.

Refereeing Standards Under Scrutiny

The controversies at the National Boxing Championships come just days after Olympian Ashish Chaudhary was disqualified in contentious circumstances from his opening-round bout, further raising concerns over officiating standards at the championships. The latest incidents have added fuel to the ongoing debate about the quality of officiating in Indian boxing.

North East Connection: Rising Stars Nikhat Zareen and Minakshi Hooda

Amidst the chaos, it is essential to highlight the performances of two boxers from North East India, Nikhat Zareen and Minakshi Hooda. Both boxers lived up to their top billing with easy wins, demonstrating their potential to represent India at the highest level. Their success serves as a source of inspiration for aspiring boxers from the region and reaffirms the rich boxing talent that exists in North East India.

Looking Ahead: Addressing the Controversies

The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has promised a detailed report on both incidents, which will be submitted to the federation. Addressing the controversies is crucial to maintaining the integrity of the sport and ensuring fair competition for all boxers. The BFI must take swift action to address the issues raised by the incidents and work towards improving the officiating standards at future competitions.
