Boosting Northeast India's Sports Potential: High-Performance Camps Launched in Guwahati
Collaborative Initiatives
In a significant stride towards enhancing sports infrastructure and nurturing talent in Northeast India, the Assam Government, in collaboration with the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS), has launched a high-performance training camp for athletes and coaches across seven sports in Guwahati.
- The camps, inaugurated by Kausar J Hilaly, Secretary, Sports and Youth Welfare, Government of Assam, are focused on long-term training systems aligned with India's Olympic roadmap.
- The collaboration with IIS will deliver internationally benchmarked high-performance programs for Taekwondo, Athletics, and Archery.
- Meanwhile, the remaining sports - chess, table tennis, tennis, and swimming - are being supported directly by the Department of Sports and Youth Welfare.
Identifying and Upgrading Talent
The initiative aims to identify new sporting talent from Assam and upgrade the skills of the state's coaches through modern training methodologies. For instance, the chess camp, held at the Civil Services Officers' Institute in Khanapara, features Bulgaria's Dejan Bojkov and India's Vishal Sareen as coaches.
International Coaching and Participation
The table tennis camp at the Bhogeswari Phukanani Indoor Stadium in Dispur is being conducted by international coach Sekpong Yomjinda from Thailand. Meanwhile, the tennis training camp at the Department of Sports Tennis Courts in Dispur is being led by Brazilian coach Vinicius Ono.
Implications for Northeast India and Beyond
These high-performance camps not only provide an opportunity for Northeast India's athletes to train under international coaches but also set a precedent for future sports development initiatives in the region.
As Indian athletes prepare for the Olympics 2024 in Paris, these camps will play a crucial role in honing their skills and preparing them for the global stage.
A Step Towards a Brighter Future
The launch of these high-performance camps in Guwahati marks a significant step towards recognizing and nurturing the sports talent in Northeast India. With continued support and initiatives like these, we can expect to see more Northeast Indian athletes competing at the national and international levels.
