Esports in India: A Promising Career Path or a Long Journey Ahead?

The world of esports is rapidly growing, and India is no exception. A recent study by YouGov, commissioned by JetSynthesys, sheds light on the evolving perceptions and aspirations of Indian esports players, offering insights into the industry's potential as a viable career option and its relevance to the North East region and broader India.

Esports as a Profession: Confidence and Ambition

The study reveals that a significant number of Indian esports players view esports as a financially viable career. Eighty-three percent believe that pursuing esports professionally is feasible, with 49% describing it as extremely viable. This confidence is translating into action, with three out of four players considering a career in esports.

Beyond Competition: Diverse Career Opportunities

Ambition in the esports industry is not limited to competitive play. Eighty-one percent of Indian esports players express interest in roles such as coaches, analysts, team managers, or event organizers, reflecting a growing understanding of esports as a broad, multi-layered career ecosystem.

Streaming and Monetization: Real Momentum

Across the esports ecosystem, streaming platforms and monetization currently stand out as the most established areas of support. Seventy-seven percent of Indian esports players see clear opportunities in streaming and monetization today, making it the most visible and accessible enabler of professional aspirations beyond tournament winnings.

Challenges and Opportunities: A Mixed Picture

While confidence and ambition are rising, the study also highlights structural gaps in the esports industry that continue to shape the decision-making of aspiring Indian players. Challenges related to family support, social stigma, and broader social acceptance remain significant, with 82% of respondents citing these among their top three concerns.

The Future of Esports in India

The study underlines a clear inflection point for Indian esports. Player confidence and intent are no longer in question. The opportunity now lies in aligning policy, infrastructure, and ecosystem development to ensure that this momentum translates into lasting careers, stronger institutions, and a globally competitive esports ecosystem in India.

As the esports industry continues to grow in India, it presents exciting opportunities for the North East region and the broader Indian context. With increased recognition from the government and international bodies, the potential for a robust, sustainable, and inclusive esports ecosystem is within reach.
