India's Top Runners Aim for Berth in Asian Cross Country Championships
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) is set to conduct a selection trial for the upcoming Asian Cross Country Championships in Japan, with over 700 athletes, including 328 female runners, confirmed to participate in the 60th National Cross-Country Championships in Ranchi, Jharkhand.
Competition Structure and Categories
Thirty-five teams, including affiliated state units, will compete in the National Cross Country Championships. The competition will feature various categories, including senior men and women (10km), junior men (8km), U20 women (6km), U18 boys (6km), U18 girls (4km), U16 boys (2km), and U16 girls (2km).
Selection Process and Team Composition
The AFI president, Bahadur Singh Sagoo, has revealed that the top four runners in each of the senior and junior groups will be selected for the Indian team. The AFI aims to select a 16-member national team, including eight in the women's section, for the 18th Asian Cross-Country Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.
Indian Athletes' Performance in Previous Championships
The Indian team has previously competed in the Asian Cross Country Championships, with the last edition held in Hong Kong. In the 2026 World Athletics Cross Country Championships held in Tallahassee, Florida (USA), Gulveer Singh was the leading Indian runner, finishing 40th with a time of 30:39. The Indian mixed relay team (4x2km) also participated, finishing 12th overall.
