ISL 2026: A New Season of Indian Football Begins

The Indian Super League (ISL), India's premier football competition, is set to resume after a prolonged hiatus. The 12th season, which will commence on February 14th, promises to be an exciting one, with the defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giants (Mohun Bagan SG) set to open the season against Kerala Blasters FC in Kolkata.

Kickoff in the City of Joy

The footballing fraternity in Kolkata is buzzing with anticipation as the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan, popularly known as the Salt Lake Stadium, will host the season opener. The clash between Mohun Bagan SG and Kerala Blasters FC is a highly anticipated match, given the rich history and fierce rivalry between the two clubs.

A Depleted Season

The upcoming season will be a single round-robin tournament, lasting from February 14th to May 17th. This is a departure from the usual home-and-away format, owing to budget constraints and the need to complete the season within a shorter timeframe.

Clubs and Fixtures

In addition to Mohun Bagan SG and Kerala Blasters FC, other teams participating in the league include FC Goa, Inter Kashi FC (a newly promoted club from Uttar Pradesh), and several other clubs. The league will take a 10-day break in late March to accommodate India's final group fixture at the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers against Hong Kong.

Budget and Simultaneous Leagues

The 2025-26 ISL season has been proposed with a total budget of 24.26 crore. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) will contribute 9.77 crore, while each participating club will contribute 1 crore. Additionally, the AIFF has confirmed that the I-League will run simultaneously with the ISL, featuring 55 matches across 11 teams.

Relevance for Northeast India and Beyond

While the focus is on Kolkata for the season opener, the ISL holds significance for the broader Indian football landscape, including the Northeast region. The league provides a platform for emerging talent and fosters a competitive spirit that drives the growth of football in the country.

Looking Ahead

As the countdown to the ISL 2026 begins, fans across the country are eagerly awaiting the action-packed matches that lie ahead. The season promises to be an exciting one, filled with drama, skill, and the unyielding spirit of football.
