The KAIST team took a different approach, redesigning the screen structure based on the actual size of real pixels. They created a near-planar structure that functions like old bulky lenses but remains incredibly thin, effectively guiding the light directly towards the user without allowing it to spread sideways and blur the picture.

Future smartphones could boast twice the brightness without consuming any additional battery power, or maintain the same brightness while using significantly less energy. This could extend the battery life of phones, ensuring they last through a full day of heavy use.
