Analysis: Instagrams top boss is missing the point about AI on the platform

Instagram's AI Conundrum: Authenticity, Algorithms, and the Future of Social Media

Instagram's AI Challenge: Authenticity vs. Algorithms

In a recent post, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, expressed concerns about the platform's future, particularly regarding AI. However, his focus on authenticity as a solution to AI-generated content may be misguided, as the issue is more deeply rooted in the algorithms that govern social media platforms.

The Question of Authenticity

Mosseri's post emphasized the importance of authentic content, differentiating it from inauthentic content generated by AI. While there is merit in this argument, it overlooks the fact that much of the human-made content on Instagram is also inauthentic, a consequence of algorithmic social media platforms.

The Role of Algorithms in Shaping Content

Creators on Instagram, including influencers, learn what the algorithm rewards and produce more of it. This results in a homogenized feed where content looks similar, often to the point where it's challenging to tell if one influencer is copying another. The algorithm, not human creativity, determines what gets seen.

The Impact on North East India and Beyond

This issue is relevant to the North East region and broader India, as the region's influencers and content creators are also subject to these algorithms. The pressure to produce inauthentic, predictable content to appease the algorithms affects creators across the country, not just in major cities.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Authentic Content

Mosseri's concerns about AI-generated content are valid, but they should not overshadow the more significant issue of the algorithms that drive social media platforms. Unless Instagram finds a way to incentivize real, authentic creators, the platform is likely to continue being flooded with inauthentic content, regardless of its human or AI origin.
