A New Era of Lunar Exploration with Axiom Space's AxEMU Spacesuit

As NASA prepares for its Artemis II mission, set to send astronauts on a crewed flight around the moon, a significant development in space exploration is taking shape in Texas. Axiom Space is hard at work on the AxEMU spacesuit, designed to enable the first human footsteps on the lunar surface since 1972 during the Artemis III mission, targeted for no earlier than 2027.

Enhanced Mobility for Greater Lunar Exploration

The key focus of the AxEMU spacesuit is mobility, building upon the legacy of the Apollo-era spacesuits. The new suit offers greater joint flexibility, allowing astronauts to perform moves such as squatting, kneeling, and picking up objects tasks that were challenging in the much stiffer Apollo suit. This enhanced mobility will enable more extensive lunar exploration, furthering our understanding of the moon and the solar system.

Reduced Weight and Extended Lunar Surface Activities

In addition to improved mobility, the AxEMU spacesuit offers a lighter Earth weight of 20 pounds (9 kg), providing a noticeable weight reduction for the wearer in the moon's lower gravity. The suit also supports up to eight hours of lunar surface activities, longer than the Apollo suits, which allowed for lunar exploration of between four and seven hours for regular operations. This extended time is made possible by the new backpack's life support setup, featuring improved systems for cooling, air, delivering food and water, and maintaining the suit's ability to withstand the extreme temperatures at the lunar south pole and protect against abrasive lunar regolith.
