Lessons Learned from Building a Multilingual and Multicurrency Classifieds Platform
In the digital age, building a global platform that caters to diverse audiences is no small feat. Our recent venture, Livben, a classifieds and promotion platform, serves as a practical case study for anyone embarking on a similar journey. This article highlights the key learnings from our experience, focusing on language, currency, discovery, trust and safety, and launch content.
Navigating Language Challenges
When building a global platform, language becomes a critical factor. However, it's essential to distinguish between UI language and listing content. Translating these separately prevents edge-case confusion and allows users to browse comfortably in their preferred language while maintaining the original listing details.
Translation Workflow
Automatic translation is a useful tool, but it's not always accurate. To ensure readiness for conversion, we kept manual editing possible, labeled content clearly, and ensured the original text was always available. This is especially important for regulated or safety-critical categories.
Managing Currency Complexities
Currency logic can get surprisingly intricate when going global. Our approach was to store the listing price as a single source of truth (amount + currency) and display conversions as display-only. Consistency in rounding rules is key to maintaining user confidence.
Optimizing Discovery and Trust
The success of classifieds depends on users' ability to quickly determine relevance, trustworthiness, and the ease of contact. We focused on clear category structure, listing detail pages that surface essential info first, predictable filtering and sorting behavior, and a frictionless path to contact.
Establishing Trust and Safety
Transparency about communication, platform roles, and safety guidelines is crucial for reducing support load and improving user trust. Clear and consistent communication helps set expectations and avoid misunderstandings.
Launching with Human-Centered Content
When launching a global platform, it's tempting to focus on keywords. However, a simple explanation of the problem you solve, a short how-it-works, and specific examples of who benefits are more effective in engaging users.
North East India and Beyond
These lessons learned from building Livben have broader implications for the North East region and India as a whole. As businesses increasingly go global, understanding how to navigate language, currency, discovery, trust, and safety challenges will become essential.
For instance, North East India, with its rich linguistic diversity, presents unique opportunities and challenges. Building platforms that cater to these languages can unlock new markets and drive economic growth. Similarly, understanding how to manage currency and price perception across markets can help Indian businesses expand their reach.
Looking Forward
As we continue to refine and grow Livben, we will carry these lessons with us. We invite others who have built global products to share their experiences and lessons learned. By collaborating and learning from each other, we can create platforms that truly serve the diverse needs of our global communities.
