As a seasoned developer based in North East India, I decided to dive into the Vibe Coding trend to form my own opinion.

To test the waters, I decided to give Vibe Coding a try. Armed with my experience in C/C++ and JavaScript, I embarked on a project to build an audio streaming system. After integrating an LLM (in this case, ChatGPT) into the process, I was left with a 2.1 thousand line codebase that, while functional, was far from optimal.

  • The autogenerated markdown documentation added to the clutter, detracting from the cleanliness and efficiency of the codebase.

The implications of Vibe Coding extend beyond individual projects. In the North East region and across India, coding education plays a crucial role in driving technological innovation. Encouraging a brainless, marketing-driven approach to coding could potentially hinder the growth of the tech industry and the development of well-rounded, knowledgeable programmers.

A Balanced Approach

While LLMs and automation tools have their place in modern development, they should not replace the need for human understanding and critical thinking. By embracing these technologies as tools, rather than substitutes for our own brains, we can harness their power while ensuring the quality and efficiency of our code.
