However, when it comes to real-world applications, a familiar pattern emerges: agents struggle with basic tasks such as logging into websites, navigating dynamic user interfaces, adapting to policy changes, and surviving API rate limits.

The API-Centric Approach: A Double-Edged Sword

Most AI agents today operate through single-platform APIs. While these APIs offer convenience and predictability, they also impose a hard limit: an agent can only act where it is allowed to act. If an endpoint changes or access is revoked, the agent stops functioning. This is not autonomy; it's permission-based automation.

In the context of Northeast India and broader India, this issue is particularly relevant for solo builders and small teams who often find themselves in a position where a single API change can break their entire product.

The Human Approach: A Missing Piece in AI Agents

Unlike humans, who navigate the web through browsers, adapting when things change, AI agents are confined to fixed interfaces that humans don't even use themselves. This raises the question: if agents are meant to work for us, why are they confined to such narrow environments?

Some teams are exploring an infrastructure-first approach, questioning whether agents should be able to interact with the web itself, through real browsers, without being locked into a single platform. This approach is harder and less convenient, but it may be necessary for true autonomy.

Towards a Free Environment for AI Agents

While the focus of most discussions remains on better models, the bigger limitation often lies in the environment in which these agents operate. The question now is whether today's API-centric approach is sustainable for solo builders and whether a shift towards a more open, web-based environment is the key to unlocking the full potential of AI agents.
